About Ileen Slegers
Ileen Slegers graduated from the KHLeuven as a midwife and then as Master of Sexology at the KULeuven. Since 2015 she has been employed at the UZ Brussels as a genetic counsellor. She has a postgraduate qualification in genetic counselling (University of Plymouth, UK) and in 2018 graduated from the Interuniversity Education Course in Human Genetics, organised by the Belgian Society of Human Genetics (BeSHG). Within the Centre for Medical Genetics she is mainly involved with counselling couples/individuals with questions about NIPT, prenatal diagnostics, preconception advice, carrier determination and pre-implantation genetic diagnostics. During this counselling path both medical, psychosocial and ethical aspects are discussed. Since 2018 she has been joint chairman of the working group of Genetic Counsellors in Belgium and is working for the recognition of genetic counsellors in Belgium. In addition to her clinical activity she is also actively involved in scientific research with regard to the counselling aspects in couples who wish to have children.
