Urinary incontinence
In the Western world, around 14% of women over the age of 30 are presumed to suffer from urinary incontinence.
Forms of incontinence
There are two main forms of incontinence:
- Stress incontinence: urine leakage after coughing, sneezing, striding out, running
- Urge incontinence: urine leakage after a false urge to urinate
Treating incontinence
The quality of life of those who suffer from incontinence is severely compromised. There are a great many misconceptions about incontinence, so people do not seek help. Women often see urinary incontinence as a normal effect of ageing. Consequently, this disorder is often not treated, although in many cases treatment is possible. So speak to your doctor about it.
Various treatments are possible, depending on the severity of the disorder:
- Lifestyle changes
- Medication
- Physiotherapy
- Surgery
