High resolution anal manometry

High resolution anal manometry is an examination which charts the working of the sphincter. It also provides information about the sensitivity of the rectum.

This examination gives the doctor a clearer idea of the cause of constipation or incontinence. This examination is also performed to prepare for an operation around the anus, such as fissures or if a tear occurs during childbirth.

The examination takes about 20 minutes.

Preparation

  • Inform your doctor about any medication you are taking.
  • If possible, empty your bowels before the examination.

The examination

  1. The doctor begins the examination by performing a rectal touch. This involves feeling the lower part of the rectum with one finger to check that the rectum is empty and whether you clearly understand the necessary actions such as clench, squeeze and so on.
  2. The measurement is taken using a small tube of about 1 cm inserted about 10 cm into the rectum. This is usually not painful.
  3. You will be asked to clench, squeeze or indicate when you feel something several times during the examination.

After the examination

Although the examination provides an insight into the working of the sphincter, the result can only be interpreted in combination with the results of the other examinations. Schedule a consultation with your referring doctor for this.
