About Prof. dr. Hendrik Reynaert
Prof. Hendrik Reynaert is the head of the Gastroenterology service. He trained to become a gastroenterologist at the Dutch-speaking Free University of Brussels (VUB) and at Yale University in New Haven, CT, United States. He completed his doctoral thesis in 2004, entitled "Somatostatin Receptor Expression by Hepatic Stellate Cells: Implications for Therapy in Chronic Liver Disease". He is also a professor at the VUB, where he teaches the subjects of physiology of the cell and organs, pathophysiology of the digestive system and diseases of the stomach, intestine and liver. As well as this, Prof. Reynaert carries out scientific research into liver fibrosis, in cooperation with the Liver Cell Biology laboratory at the VUB. In addition, he is ‘principal investigator’ in phase I, II and III studies and is the author of over 100 peer-reviewed publications. Prof. Hendrik Reynaert is a Fellow of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (FAASLD). He is an active board member of the Flemish Gastroenterology Association (VVGE) (chairman from 2012-2017) and the Belgian Association for the Study of the Liver (BASL) (chairman from 2010-2012). He is a member of the Belgian Society of GastroIntestinal Endoscopy (BSGIE), the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) and the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA).
