Expertise

Expertise

The Gastroenterology service specialises in diseases of the digestive system: disorders of the oesophagus, stomach, intestine, liver and pancreas. The service has developed specific fields of expertise for all these conditions.

Your first appointment involves a general consultation. You are then further monitored in the specialised clinics, depending on your disorder and care needs.

Specialised clinics

IBD clinic

Patients with chronic intestinal disorders such as Crohn’s disease and colitis ulcerosa are treated and monitored in the IBD clinic (IBD stands for Inflammatory Bowel Disease).

This involves a team of doctors and specialised nurses.

Liver clinic

Patients with acute and chronic liver diseases, both viral and other forms of hepatitis, non-alcoholic liver disease, liver cirrhosis and benign and malignant liver tumours are cared for in the Liver clinic.

The degree of liver damage is determined using an ultrasound device and FibroScan, without a liver biopsy.

Clinic for functional gastrointestinal abnormalities and food allergies

UZ Brussel has also started a clinic for functional gastrointestinal abnormalities and food allergies.

State-of-the-art high resolution manometry, pH metrics, impedance metrics and various breath tests are used here to detect and monitor abnormalities and food allergies.

Multidisciplinary cooperation

The unit works closely with the experts in the Abdominal Surgery service to ensure that patients receive the best possible care.

Consultations in proctology (for disorders of the anus), pelvic floor pathologies and constipation are held in cooperation with a proctology surgeon so that the patient can receive the best treatment immediately.
