Ultrasound

An ultrasound examination uses sound waves in the same way as the sonar of a boat. UZ Brussel has ultrasound specialists for the:

• Abdomen
• Blood vessels
• Muscles
• Glands
• Bones

An ultrasound examination is often used in pregnancies and to examine the heart in the Cardiology service.

Procedure

The examination is totally harmless. Gel is rubbed on the part of the body concerned. An image is created of the part of the body being examined using a probe. This examination is easy to carry out but requires a great deal of expertise on the part of the specialist in the anatomy and diseases of each area of the body.
