Preventing further strokes
To ensure that the risk of another stroke is as small as possible, it is best to follow the advice given below.
Stop smoking
Smoking doubles your risk of a stroke. If you are motivated to stop smoking and are looking for support, you can get the stop smoking support provided in our hospital.
You can make an appointment in the Pneumology service for this.
Blood pressure
Check your blood pressure regularly and discuss this with your GP. A blood pressure above 140/90 mmHg quadruples the risk of a stroke.
Medication
The use of medication to thin the blood, reduce blood pressure and reduce cholesterol can sharply lessen the risk of another stroke. This medication may only be changed after consultation with your treating doctor. Please contact your doctor if you experience any side effects.
A healthy lifestyle
As well as taking medication to reduce cholesterol, you would be advised to follow a diet that is low in cholesterol.
If you suffer from diabetes, it is also extremely important to have your sugar level checked regularly and to follow the advice of your treating doctor. An excessively high sugar level has a very negative impact on the blood vessels.
Avoid or remedy any problems of overweight. Drink alcohol in moderation. No more than two glasses per day. For dietary advice, you can consult the hospital dietician.
Physical exercise
It is good to exercise as much as possible within the limits of your capabilities. Moving around is good for the circulation and can help keep or bring your weight under control. You can discuss your possibilities with your physiotherapist.
