Treatment and rehabilitation
The stroke team immediately endeavours to stimulate the affected side of your body as much as possible. If necessary, you are placed in a special position to prevent severe tension in the muscles. The stroke team also tries to get the affected side moving as quickly as possible and pays appropriate attention to your ability to speak and understand. When necessary, you start speech and swallowing therapy.
Uncovering the cause of the stroke
The stroke team organises targeted tests to uncover the cause of the stroke.
Possible tests include:
- Examining the blood vessels in the neck to detect narrowing or tears
- MRI scan of the brain to chart the lesion
- Ultrasound of the heart to detect abnormalities in the shape or valves or find clots
- Electroencephalography (EEG) to measure brain activity
