With or without Belgian national health insurance?
Belgian patients with national health insurance
For Belgian patients who are fully paid up with the national health insurance scheme, the RIZIV reimburses the services of the Centre for Medical Genetics (CMG) to a large extent. What remains are the non-refundable medical expenses [excess].
In certain situations, depending on the nature and the complexity of your condition, the RIZIV reimburses the full cost of the consultations. You are then not liable for the non-refundable medical expenses [excess].
The same applies if because of the nature and the complexity of your condition the blood samples have to be sent abroad for analysis. Then there is no cost for you, nor is there any excess for the laboratory analysis. In these cases the cost is paid via an agreement between the genetics centres and the RIZIV. The budget allocated by the RIZIV is, however, limited and insufficient to recover all the costs for these analyses.
Patients without Belgian national health insurance
Patients without Belgian national health insurance, for example patients from abroad, bear the full cost of the services and/or their treatment themselves, unless they benefit from an intervention by their local health insurance scheme.
